Helicopter Flight Instruction: Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does it take to become a licensed helicopter pilot?

The answer varies, and depends on the student, weather, and flight availability.  However, if the student is available to fly at least six hours per week and studies diligently, the private rating is easily accomplished in ninety days.  For the professional pilot students, it is possible to achieve the Private, Commercial, and CFI ratings in 12-16 months.

  • When can I start my helicopter pilot training?

As a part 61 school, we are not restricted to a set syllabus.  Therefore, each student can start when he/she is ready, and each student progresses at his/her own pace.

  • How much does it cost to get my license?

That depends on several factors such as prior flight experience, which ratings you are seeking, and how quickly proficiency increases.  However, our flight training catalog gives a good idea of the cost of each rating.

  • Do I need to have my fixed wing rating before I can start helicopter pilot training?

No.  More and more people are learning to fly helicopters with no fixed wing experience.

  • If I complete your professional helicopter pilot program, will you hire me to teach at your school?

While we certainly prefer to hire our own students, it always depends on the needs of the company.

  • What are my chances of getting a job after completing the training?

Excellent.  There is a shortage of helicopter pilots, and that is not going to get better any time soon.  Helicopters are becoming more and more widely used, and the demand for pilots continues to exceed pilot availability.

  • Once I complete my training, what kind of job can I get?

Typically, plan on working as a flight instructor until you have 1,000 hours or more.  However, this gives you time to demonstrate your ability to work in a professional environment while you improve your skill in the helicopter.
